It started off with a simple intention of encouraging the
elderly to visit the old Havelock Community Centre to fully
utilized the facilities available.
Then the group of volunteers realized that most of the elderly
are actually on Public Assistance. Hence, they decided to
do something to help this group of people who had contributed
a lot to the growth of our country.
Therefore, the Havelock CC. Senior Citizens' Club - Volunteer
Service Group was formed in 1980.
The volunteers begun with visiting the elderly who were residing
along Singapore River on a weekly basis, to help the elderly
to read letters, to write letters, to help them with house
chores when necessary and most important of all to lend them
a ear - to listen to them.
Two years latter, about 1982, the Volunteer Service Group
shifted to Telok Ayer Hong Lim Green CC and in 1984, the volunteers
creatively innovated a meal service known as the Cheap Meal
Scheme with the objective of providing a balanced and nutritious
meal at an affordable price to the elderly.
Later, as the group grows with more volunteers from all walks
of life joining, a medical team, handicraft committee were
formed to provide better services to the elderly.
Currently, the group has a pool of 130 volunteers of which
90 of them are actively involved in the weekly home visitation
programme and 40 of them in the Cheap Meal Scheme. Together
we serve a group of 260 elderly of which 198 of them are on
Public Assistance Scheme.
